Oak Creek Canyon — Scenic Drive, Slide Rock & Cabins

Oak Creek Canyon is the 14-mile river gorge that climbs north out of Uptown Sedona on State Route 89A toward Flagstaff — a sheer-walled, cottonwood-shaded green ribbon that feels nothing like the red-rock high desert two miles south of it. The road is officially designated an Arizona Scenic Byway, and at the top of the switchbacks the Oak Creek Vista overlook is the single most-pulled-off viewpoint in the state.

What defines Oak Creek Canyon

Oak Creek Canyon is the 14-mile river gorge that runs north from Uptown Sedona up to Flagstaff via SR-89A — an Arizona Scenic Byway that climbs roughly 2,500 feet through ponderosa pine and red sandstone, with a permanent year-round creek braiding down the canyon floor. The road is one of the most photographed drives in the American Southwest and a different ecosystem from the high desert two miles south of it.

What to do

The canyon\'s greatest hits, north to south: the scenic drive itself, with the Oak Creek Vista overlook at the top of the switchbacks; West Fork of Oak Creek — the canyon\'s most popular hike, a flat creek-crossing trail through narrow walls; Slide Rock State Park for the natural sandstone water slide; and Midgley Bridge near the south end for a quick photo stop and short trail.

When to go

Late October to mid-November is the canyon\'s defining season — see our fall foliage guide for week-by-week colour timing. Summer is hot in the desert but 10-15°F cooler in the canyon shade. Winter occasionally closes the switchbacks for ice.

Where to eat & stay overnight in the canyon

Indian Gardens Cafe & Market is the iconic creekside coffee-and-sandwich stop. Cress on Oak Creek at L\'Auberge is the special-occasion creekside dinner. Historic cabin resorts (Junipine, Garland\'s when reopen, Don Hoel\'s) line the road, but they book a year ahead.

Stay nearby

Most of our rentals are within a 10-minute drive of the canyon mouth — close enough for early-morning West Fork starts, far enough to come home to a hot tub. The official visitsedona.com site keeps live updates on canyon road conditions. Browse all properties.
