Sedona Mountain Biking Outfitters
Sedona is on every serious mountain biker's short list — the slickrock terrain rivals Moab, the trail density is higher than any town of comparable size in the West, and the network is well-marked and reliably maintained. Two reputable shops handle the bulk of the rental and guide business, and the trail picks below scale from "I have not been on a bike in years" to "I have an enduro setup and a death wish".
Why Sedona ranks among the world\'s best
The slickrock terrain that draws hikers to Sedona is also what makes the mountain biking exceptional — the sandstone is grippy under tyres, the natural ramps and bowls form ride-able features, and the trail network sprawls in every direction from town. The trail system is maintained jointly by the Forest Service, the Verde Valley Cyclists Coalition, and the local shops; it is well-signed, the difficulty ratings are honest, and the etiquette is good.
Thunder Mountain Bikes
1695 W SR-89A, West Sedona. The larger of the two shops. Premium full-suspension rental fleet (Yeti, Pivot, Specialized — typically current model year), professional shuttle service to the upper trailheads, guided rides at all ability levels, and a polished retail floor. Their Sedona Trail Sampler guided ride is a classic intro-to-Sedona day — three classic trails, knowledgeable guide, lunch included.
Over The Edge Sports
1695 W SR-89A, West Sedona (right across from Thunder Mountain). The original Sedona mountain bike shop, with deep roots in the local racing community and a slightly more hardcore vibe. Excellent for guests who already know what they want. Their rental fleet skews toward enduro-leaning bikes; their guides know every line on every trail in town.
Trail picks by ability
Beginner — Bell Rock Pathway (3.6 miles, flat sand and slickrock, great views, almost no technical features). Right starter loop for anyone who has not ridden in years.
Intermediate — Cockscomb Loop (6 miles, rolling singletrack on the west side of town, classic Sedona slickrock features, good practice for handling exposed sandstone). The local benchmark for "I am a competent rider but not an expert."
Advanced — Hangover Trail (technical exposed singletrack on the north side, drops and slickrock features, big consequences if you blow a line). Earn your way to this; it is what serious riders come to Sedona for.
Expert — White Line. Do not attempt without local guidance and prior Sedona experience. People have died on this trail.
What to rent and what to wear
Rent a full-suspension trail bike or enduro bike — hardtails are punishing on Sedona\'s rocky descents. Bring or rent: helmet (essential), gloves, padded shorts, sturdy shoes (flat-pedal MTB shoes if you have them), sunglasses, a hydration pack with two litres minimum. Sun protection on any exposed skin. Both shops include a basic tool kit and a spare tube with rentals.
