Hot Air Balloon Rides Over Sedona

A sunrise balloon flight over the red rocks is the experience most guests remember from their entire Sedona trip. You meet in the dark, you climb into a basket as the burners roar, you lift silently over Bell Rock and Cathedral Rock as the first light hits the sandstone, and you land an hour later for a champagne breakfast in the desert. Two operators fly: Red Rock Balloons and Northern Light Balloon Expeditions.

What you actually do

The pickup is in the dark — typically 5:30 AM in summer, 6:30 AM in winter, depending on official sunrise. A van collects you from a designated meet point (most operators will pick up from your hotel or a central location near our West Sedona rentals) and drives 20 minutes to the launch field, usually on private land outside town. You watch the crew unroll the balloon and inflate it with the burners — itself a spectacle worth being there for. You climb into the basket (four to twelve passengers depending on the operator and the balloon), the pilot fires the burners, and you lift silently into the still pre-dawn air. The flight lasts about an hour. You drift over the red rocks at altitudes between 200 and 2,000 feet, depending on the winds the pilot finds. The sun rises behind Bell Rock or Cathedral Rock and lights up the formations. You land in a field somewhere downwind. The chase crew arrives, pours champagne, and serves a light breakfast (fruit, pastries, coffee) in the desert. The whole experience runs three to four hours from pickup to drop-off.

The two operators

Red Rock Balloon Adventures (redrockballoons.com) — the longest-running Sedona operator, founded in 1989. FAA-certified, excellent safety record, generally rated as the more polished experience. Larger baskets (8-12 passengers).

Northern Light Balloon Expeditions — the smaller-basket alternative, often flying intimate four-passenger flights. Right pick if you want something closer to a private experience.

Weather cancellations

Balloons fly only when surface winds are calm and visibility is good. Summer monsoon season (July–September) and winter storm fronts cause the most cancellations; spring and fall are the most reliable. Operators do not charge for weather cancellations and will rebook you the next morning, but if you are on a tight trip, build a two-day buffer.

What to wear

The pre-dawn pickup is genuinely cold — bring a warm layer (fleece or down jacket), long pants, closed shoes, and a hat. Once airborne the burner radiates heat downward into the basket and you will warm up; layers you can shed are the move. Sunglasses for the sunrise. No high heels (you are stepping in and out of a wicker basket).

Age and weight

Most operators require passengers to be at least six years old and able to stand for the duration of the flight (no seats in the basket). Pregnancy is a contraindication. Weight limits vary by operator — call ahead if any passenger is significantly above average build.

Stay nearby

The early pickup makes a Sedona base essential — no one wants to drive an hour from Flagstaff at 4:30 AM. Browse our Sedona vacation rentals for a West Sedona or Village of Oak Creek property close to the typical balloon pickup points.
