Airport Mesa Sunset
Airport Mesa is the sunset spot in Sedona — a flat-topped volcanic ridge on Airport Road that catches the last light on Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and the Mogollon Rim all at once. The main saddle overlook is a few minutes' walk from a small lot, and on a clear evening the whole valley turns the color of embers.
What it is
Airport Mesa rises about 350 feet above West Sedona, capped by a small municipal airport and ringed by a popular loop trail. Two viewpoints matter for sunset: the unmarked saddle overlook on the lower slope (free roadside parking, a five-minute scramble up) and the larger Sky Ranch Lodge / Airport Vortex area near the top. Both deliver wraparound red-rock panoramas; the saddle is the photographers' favorite for its open western horizon.
Getting there
From West Sedona, turn south onto Airport Road off AZ-89A and climb roughly half a mile. The handful of roadside pull-offs at the saddle fill fast — arrive 45 minutes before sunset, especially in spring and fall. The paved upper lot near the airport charges a small fee (Red Rock Pass or pay station). The walk up to the saddle is short but rocky; closed-toe shoes help.
Good to know
The lot is tiny and the road is narrow — do not block driveways or the airport gate. Bring a layer; the mesa catches wind and cools quickly after dark. Stay for the afterglow, then use headlights and care on the walk down. The same overlook is excellent at sunrise with far fewer people.
